Originally established as the Mediterranean Aviation Company Limited, Medavia was set-up in Malta in 1978 as a joint venture between Air Malta, Libyan-Arab Airlines and the Libyan-Arab Maltese Holding Company.
As Malta prepared for the departure of the British Forces in March 1979, the local government envisaged a labour surplus in aviation-related areas. At the time, Air Malta was still in its infancy and could not absorb all these surplus labour. The idea was raised of establishing a small company to maintain general aviation aircraft and small aircraft in Libya and perhaps in the southern Mediterranean, especially as hangars would be available after the departure of the British Forces.
Air Malta, acting on behalf of the Maltese Government, approached a number of foreign companies in order to set-up a joint venture. After extensive talks with various companies, Mediterrenean Aviation Co. Ltd. was set-up.
The newly-established company soon realised that the oil industry needed a charter airline operating small aircraft between the main centres and the oilfields in the desert. Medavia started offering these services, using initially four Casa 212 aircraft.
Today, Medavia resides in the former British Forces facilities at Hal-Safi, Malta, and forms part of the Libyan Arab Foreign Investment Company (L.A.F.I.Co.) group of companies. The company is an internationally accredited enterprise and offers a wide-range of aviation services. Such services include: aircraft maintenance, flight operations charters with its own fleet and business charter brokerage, aircraft management and flight operations support.

Medavia is accredited as a European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Part-145 Maintenance Organisation (approval issued by Malta's Directorate of Civil Aviation, with reference 'MT.145.02').
Medavia offers line and base maintenance for a variety of aircraft, including: Casa 212s, Dornier 328s (line only), Dash 8s, Beech 1900s, Fairchild SA227s (line only), DHC-6s, Tecnam P92Js, and single/twin-engine Cessnas/Pipers. The facility can also caters for other aircraft ad-hoc.
Work is carried out under the EASA Part-145 approval or to specific dispensations issued by the National Aeronautic Association of the aircraft being maintained. The division also runs and maintains aircraft operated by the company overseas.
