Lufthansa Technik Malta

As a 'Centre of Excellence' within the Lufthansa Technik AG, Lufthansa Technik Malta (LHTM) focuses on C-Checks for aircraft of the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 family, a maintenance event that occurs every 15 to 18 months.  The company's maintenance facility, in a hangar close-by Apron 2 at Malta International Airport, now accommodates two C-Check lines, which can be operated simultaneously.  Apart from the concentration on the C-Check, LHTM is able to offer further services with the Lufthansa Technik alliance.  Cockpit door modifications for instance have been made in co-operation with Lufthansa Technik Brussels.

LHTM, a joint venture between Lufthansa Technik AG (51%) and the Maltese flag-carrier Air Malta plc (49%), was officially founded on June 13, 2002 with the signing of the contract between Mr Louis Grech, Chairman of Air Malta, and Mr August W. Henningsen,  Chairman of Lufthansa Technik's Executive Board.  LHTM started officially its operations in Malta, initially with a single production line, on January 11, 2003.

LHTM increased its capabilities for maintenance, repair & overhaul services with the launching of a second production line in the third quarter of 2006.  This was possibile after additional investment - undertaken solely by Lufthansa Technik AG - in tooling, equipment and the infrustructure was made.

A further investment of €55 million was announced in April 2007 when the Maltese Government and Lufthansa Technik Malta signed a formal agreement to set up new maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities for wide-body aircraft.  This expansion project is estimated to create over 500 jobs over four to five years and new training and development opportunities in aircraft maintenance.

As a result of these investments, the partner's shareholding in the company have changed.  Now, Lufthansa Technik AG holds 92% and Air Malta plc holds 8% of the company.

Works on the new hangar facility, between apron-3 and apron-4, over an area of 27,000 square metres with a 270 metre span, 90 metres depth and 34 metres height, including a number of back shops and which can accommodate two wide-body aircraft and two narrow-body aircraft simultaneously started in June 2007.  The official ceremony of the laying of the foundation stone, presided over by the Prime Minister of Malta and Deutsche Lufthansa AG CEO and Chairman, took place at site of building on July 5, 2007.  The new hangar facility will be completed by October 2008.
