As a 'Centre of Excellence' within the Lufthansa Technik AG, Lufthansa Technik Malta (LTM) focuses on C-Checks for aircraft of the Boeing B737 and Airbus A320 families, and C/D-Checks on Airbus A330/A340 aircraft. The company's maintenance, repair and overhaul facility, in a three hangar complex between Apron-3 and Apron-4 at Malta Int'l Airport, now accommodates two C/D-Check (for wide-body aircraft) and three C-Check (for narrow-body aircraft) bays, which can be operated simultaneously.

LTM, a joint venture between Lufthansa Technik AG (51%) and the Maltese flag-carrier Air Malta plc (49%), was officially founded on June 13, 2002 with the signing of the contract between Mr L. Grech, Chairman of Air Malta, and Mr A. W. Henningsen, Chairman of Lufthansa Technik's Executive Board.
LTM started officially its operations in Malta, from Hangar-2 (Arpon-2) at Malta Int'l Airport, on January 11, 2003, initially with a single production line focusing mainly on C-Checks on narrow-body aircraft of the B737 and A320 families. LTM increased productivity in the third quarter of 2006, with the launching of a second production line, also for narrow-body aircraft. This was possibile after additional investment in tooling, equipment and the infrustructure by Lufthansa Technik AG.
An investment of €55 million was announced in April 2007 when the Maltese Government and Lufthansa Technik Malta signed a formal agreement to set up an Airbus A330/A340 wide-body aircraft overhaul (up to D-Check) facility with two bays, in addition to the narrow-body aircraft production lines.
Works on the new LTM facility, made-up of three hangars (two hangars that can take a wide-body aircraft each and a third hangar that can take three narrow-body aircraft simultaneously) and an adjacent administrative/workshops block, started in June 2007. The official ceremony of the laying of the foundation stone, presided over by the Prim Minister of Malta and Deutsche Lufthansa AG's CEO/Chairman, took place at site of building on July 5, 2007. The new LTM complex was finally inaugurated by the Prim Minister of Malta on April 4, 2009.
As a result of these two investments, since the setting-up of LTM in Malta, the partner's shareholding in the company has changed. Now, Lufthansa Technik AG holds 92% and Air Malta plc holds 8%.
